The issue is whether knowledge is subjected to independent testing.\r\nA man starting with nothing can learn remarkable things. What he cannot do is reliably distinguish truth from error through conviction alone. Every serious discipline, from mathematics to engineering, developed methods of external verification because human beings are exceptionally good at convincing themselves they are right.\r\nThe choice is not between institutions and independent thought. The choice is between ideas that are tested and ideas that are not. Without something external to measure against, introspection compounds error. Knowledge advances when belief encounters reality and survives.",
